Derry's Dark Secrets: What the IT Prequel Reveals!
NEWS RATING
The Secrets of 1962: How IT: Welcome to Derry Unlocks Pennywise’s Origin Story and Connects to the Stephen King Films

The nightmare is back, and this time, we're going deeper. IT: Welcome to Derry, the new HBO Max prequel series, isn't just a conventional horror show—it's a crucial, canonical expansion of the Stephen King universe. Set 27 years before the events of It: Chapter One, the show promises to finally reveal the long-held secrets of Derry, Maine, and the terrifying entity known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown.

The show is a must-watch for fans, aiming to answer a central question: How did the town of Derry become the epicenter of this cyclical evil?

Going Back to 1962: The Timeline Connection

The creative team, led by Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti, chose the year 1962 for a specific reason: it marks the previous cycle of terror, 27 years before the Losers' Club first battled Pennywise in 1989.
  • Prequel Focus: The series draws heavily from the "Derry Interludes" in Stephen King’s original novel—the historical chapters that briefly described earlier horrific events in the town's history.
  • A New Losers Club Era: Instead of focusing on the familiar faces of Bill, Beverly, and Richie, the prequel introduces a new group of children and adults who must confront the growing evil that has settled in the town since the late 19th century.
  • The Mike Hanlon Link: The show centers on the family of Mike Hanlon, the only member of the original Losers' Club who stayed behind in Derry. The series explores his grandfather's struggle against the town's unseen forces, providing emotional weight and context for Mike's adult role as the historian and keeper of the town's dark truth.

Bill Skarsgård Returns: A More Visceral Pennywise

Bill Skarsgård reprises his iconic role as Pennywise, and early reviews suggest his portrayal in the prequel is even more "ravenous" and "visceral." The 1960s setting, with its Cold War anxiety and social tension, provides the perfect emotional playground for the entity to prey on human fears.

"The prequel allows us to explore the historical cycles of Derry's curse and show how fear itself is a weaponized disease that spreads through generations," the Muschiettis stated, confirming the show’s themes run deeper than simple jump scares.
